Obscure 80's Post Punk, Experimental,Art Rock. When they say 'Obscure' they mean it in this case. I tripped over this snooping around the Bay. THE RICKETS were from Olympia, WA and were maybe the only spikey drunk punk band at that point in the town's history. While everyone else was concentrating on twee pop, minimalist punk and feigning pre-teen innocence even though they were pushing 30, THE RICKETS sang about getting drunk, hating their job, destroying Olympia and getting drunk again.

Reggae. Dub. Country soul. Brazilian post-punk. And now proto-punk. What can’t the mystical leprechauns over at Soul Jazz do? The London-based label and shop has got a new compilation out, Punk 45: Sick On You! One Way Spit! After the Love & Before the Revolution Vol. 3: Proto-Punk 1969-77. Well, maybe creating succinct, easy-to-remember album titles is one thing they’re not exactly tops at.
But who cares when the music is this good? Following in the black leather footsteps of previous Soul Jazz comps Punk 45: Kill The Hippies! Kill Yourself! and Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing as Society, this latest comp focuses on the emerging proto-punk movement of the early 1970s, with tracks from the scenes then growing in Cleveland, San Francisco, L.A., Baltimore, and London, natch. And of course, like all good punk things, this one comes with “extensive sleeve-notes” from Jon Savage. The album is available as a CD, double-vinyl, and for those of us who just can’t get enough of the first part of the 21st century, digital release. Check out the first selection and full tracklist below, and order over here.
